The electrophoretic study of sarcoplasmic fraction soluble in water or in low ionic strength solutions can be applied to species identification; in this field isoelectric focusing (IEF) gives excellent results. In this paper thin agarose gels have been used in IEF for the determination of marine species. The preparation of these agarose gels and the running conditions are described. The use of agarose gel in IEF is a relatively new technique, different companies market several different agarose ampholyte systems; these products should be tested to find the most adaptable. |

Different parameters have been followed regularly at various times of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus ) ripening. Concentration in NaCl and water content as well as values of water activity and pH are constant and remain quite stable during the entire study period. The relatively acid pH value and the quite low measured water activity level created good conditions for preventing microbial putrefaction at room temperature. The free amino acids and non proteinaceous nitrogen increase indicated the modifications occurring in muscular proteins. These changes resulted in an important proteolytic activity modulated by the medium conditions, especially; pH, temperature and ionic strength. The enzymatic activity slowed down regularly with time but was not... |

Fucoidans are sulfated fucosylated polymers from brown algae cell wall that exhibit some heparin/heparan sulfate properties. We previously demonstrated that these polysaccharides were able in vitro to stimulate dermal fibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix deposition. Here, we investigated the action of a 16 kDa fucoidan fraction on parameters involved in connective tissue breakdown. This fucoidan is able to inhibit gelatinase A secretion and stromelysin 1 induction by interleukin-1 beta on dermal fibroblasts in culture. Furthermore, we observed that fucoidan increases the rate of association of MMPs with their specific inhibitors namely TIMPs. Using tissue sections of human skin in ex vivo experiments, we evidenced that this polysaccharide was... |

Marine (= blue) biotechnology, i.e. the utilization of marine bio-resources as a target or source of biotechnological applications, is a field with massive potential for innovation and economic growth. In a context of rapid climate change and increasing pressure on natural resources, renewed interest in marine biotechnology has been promoted by application of recent methodological and technological advances, notably in bioprocessing and in the various –omics domains, to the study of marine biodiversity. Marine biological resources potentially represent a sustainable raw material for exploitation in diverse fields, including nutrition, health, agriculture, aquaculture, energy, environment, and cosmetics. Marine biotechnology is now recognized as a... |

The shell color of the Mollusca has attracted naturalists and collectors for hundreds of years, while the molecular pathways regulating pigment production and the pigments themselves remain poorly described. In this study, our aim was to identify the main pigments and their molecular pathways in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera—the species displaying the broadest range of colors. Three inner shell colors were investigated—red, yellow, and green. To maximize phenotypic homogeneity, a controlled population approach combined with common garden conditioning was used. Comparative analysis of transcriptomes (RNA-seq) of P. margaritifera with different shell colors revealed the central role of the heme pathway, which is involved in the production of red... |

In this work we firstly tested the influence of low molecular weight fucoidan extracted from pheophicae cell wall on bidimensional cultured normal human osteoblasts behaviours. Secondly impregnation procedure with LMW fucoidan of bone biomaterial (Lubboc®) we explored in this bone extracellular matrix context its capabilities to support human osteoblastic behaviour in 3D culture. In bidimensionnal cultures we evidenced that: LMW fucoidan promotes human osteoblast proliferation, collagen type I expression and favours precocious alkaline phosphatase activity. Furthermore with LMW fucoidan von Kossa's staining was positive at 30 days and only positive at 45 days in absence of LMW fucoidan. In our three dimensional culture models with the biomaterial... |
